There are a lot of ways to slice this epic fiasco, but my first thought when it appeared that the Secret Service was “stepping back” in their protection of Trump at this event ywas: If it was good enough for Kennedy, it’s good enough for Trump.

Some years ago I began to see the SS as operating in a manner similar to the CIA (maybe everyone else knows this — I didn’t!), including covert ops. Even if 99% of SS agents are assigned to “legitimate” ops, I think their overarching roll is to protect the State above all else, with extreme prejudice.
