A superb biopic

Writes Boyd Cathey:

Friends,

Here below is a link to one of my five or six all time favorite films; it’s ADMIRAL (2008), a Russian film (with English subtitles), available in the American DVD NTSC format. It is a biopic of Grand Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak, who after the fall and execution of the Tsar, became Russia’s Supreme Leader (White Russia) and led the White forces until he was delivered over to the Bolsheviks by the dastardly French (in Irkutsk). The film manages to capture Kolchak’s brilliant naval and military career (lots of military and armed combat), but also his personal life, and perhaps most importantly, his strong religious faith: the last scene, when he is executed and then thrown into the ice which the Bolshies have carved into the shape of a Cross (meant to be an insult, but not rendered that way cinematically, as an almost divine golden light shines down through the cold water as the body descends), is both riveting and emotionally shattering.

Here’s a short Youtube trailer.  The film, I think, is available via Amazon.
