The Fall of the Wall

Lew, I remember that night very well, I imagine you do, too. A few years before I’d visited East Berlin, that shabby little socialist utopia. As I left, I said to the young East German guard, “Komm mit.” His only reply, “Kann nicht.” I knew then the regime was doomed. On the night of the fall of Wall, I phoned everybody I knew in West Germany, to congratulate them. They were overjoyed at the news, in an understated German kind of way.
