This is an article I published for the Mises Institute 12 years ago, long before I came to be employed by Mises. Many folks have told me it is the most powerful article I ever wrote during my 27 years of publishing my writings. No one else has ever written up this little history tidbit.
It’s a stark reminder of how government manipulates science and the food supply to ram an agenda down our throats to appease the Medical-Pharmaceutical-Industrial-Big Ag Complex.
It all started in 1977 when the United States Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs, chaired by Senator George McGovern, published the absurd “Dietary Goals for the United States” and commenced the War on Fat in favor of ultra-processed garbage food. Healthy, nutritious, real-food fat became Public Enemy #1. Pork was just one of the many casualties, as I describe in this article.
