The Mentally Ill Keeping the Mentally Ill off Planes

Meet Marilyn Hartman, a “serial stowaway.” Sporting white hair and a frank, disarming gaze, Ms. Hartman is 66 years old, homeless, and supposedly insane. Yet this plucky gal has outwitted the TSA’s goons time and again, waltzing past them without showing ID or a ticket and then boarding planes. Her latest exploit about ten days ago garnered her headlines worldwide, when she hopped a flight from Chicago’s O’Hare to London—yes, as in England. Our Rulers hauled her into court, as usual; the judge ordered her to stay away from airports, as usual. And yesterday, there she was again, back at O’Hare.

Obviously, Ms. Hartman makes the TSA look almost as foolish as it actually is. And a measure of her success is the vehemence with which its apologists argue that no, she doesn’t: “Hartman … took a $2,400 flight for free. But that’s not a security issue. That’s a business issue. … And while she managed to get past security without a boarding pass or passport, she was screened for weapons – and, presumably, nail files and tubes of ointment – like everyone else.”

Balderdash. No wonder, then, that the TSA relied on the same absurd excuse: that it rifled her belongings and irradiated her in its carcinogenic gizmo, thereby protecting passengers—instead of the airlines, who are her only victim—from this non-threat. But everyone knows the Thieves and Sexual Assailants are as inept in their rifling and groping as they are at preventing an elderly lady missing a few marbles from crashing their unconstitutional checkpoints.

You go, girl!
