I thought I could make it through the long Memorial Day weekend without seeing a church sign with some patriotic or militaristic nonsense on it. It didn’t make it. I saw a sign yesterday evening that read “Pray for Our Troops.” Sounds harmless, but I doubt the church that put this on the sign was thinking the same thing as when I wrote “Pray for Our Troops.” I was alerted to some other Memorial Day blasphemy by two readers:
“I saw the most offensive site yesterday Memorial day in Moody, AL. Someone had put up a large cross at a major intersection, draped, almost completely covered with an American flag. So, they obviously believe the State is greater than God.”
“My pastor suggested yesterday that two years of ‘mandatory service’ in the military should be implemented starting at age 18, for males and females alike.”
Thank God there are some success stories.
