“I Love a Parade….”

… was a great hit back in 1931, complete with the drum corps and the indispensable crooner.

Fourth of July parades used to be ubiquitous, but that was when patriotism meant love of country (patria – fatherland), not love of government.

So here in the Shenandoah Valley, there’s only one Fourth of July parade, with ball games, Baptists and veterans for lunch, country music, and fireworks. No mention of the speech by the winner of the Declaration of Independence contest in the local schools, probably because that document is now illegal because it talks about God so much.

The Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia is probably illegal too, since it (quite surprisingly) still contains this passage, adopted five days before July 4, 1776:

“it is the mutual duty of all to practice Christian forbearance, love, and charity towards each other.” (Article 16).

That’s probably illegal too.

Well, maybe next year.
