On what was anticipated before the debate:
1. “Vance will do far better than Trump did in his debate against Harris.”
J.D. definitely won overall, unlike Trump against Harris. Walz was noticeably fidgety, nervous, and jerky early in the debate and at times later. Clearly didn’t answer the first question. J.D. started off cringe with his hokey bio, but quickly got on track. Good answer on climate change from a MAGA perspective. Absolutely nailed Walz on his many contradictions (you’d never see that from Brain-Fog Don).
J.D.: weak answer on guns. Make schools more like prisons? Really?
Closing statement for Walz: he’s proud of Dick Cheney’s endorsement!
Closing statement for Vance: inflation, Harris makes all sorts of promises for what she’ll do on Day 1, but Day 1 for her was 1,400 days ago.
2. “The moderators (Margaret Brennan, Norah O’Donnell) will be in the tank for…Pillsbury Doughboy/Assistant Coach Commie.”
Definitely favored Walz, but not to the laughable extent the ABC moderators favored Harris. Margaret Brennan fact checked J.D., but to his credit, unlike Trump, J.D. called her out on it. J.D. had his mic cut when responding to Walz (not saying this was the moderators, but someone at CBS). Moderators asked Walz about claiming to have been in China during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre when he was actually in Nebraska. Walz: “I’m a knucklehead!”
No mention of hurricane Helene and the port strike, obviously to favor Walz.
3. “Probably at least a half hour of the debate will be spent on the January 6, Charlottesville, and bloodbath hoaxes.”
Didn’t count the minutes, but way too much time was spent on January 6 and Trump’s complaints about the 2020 election (no Charlottesville or bloodbath hoaxes). J.D. pointed out that Hillary Clinton challenged the 2016 election, claiming that Putin stole it for Trump.
What the debate did more than anything else was highlight the weakness of the top of the two tickets. Both of them completely outshined their running mates. Walz came off much more likable than the cackling hyena.
