Inside: Libertarian Gossip

From the Tom Woods Letter:

Now before you say to me, “Woods, you shouldn’t be fighting with X or Y,” and “don’t be divisive,” etc., be warned that I will ask you: did you say the same thing to the person who started this with me, or are you criticizing only the side that is defending itself, namely mine?

Ol’ David Boaz, former executive director of the Cato Institute, has not been a fan of your host here. Hard to believe that an affable guy like me could have enemies, I know, but I’m afraid it is so.

In a recent interview with Nick Gillespie, Boaz went into his usual routine about “racism” at the Mises Institute, insinuating that people there are “pro-slavery.” (I am sure it is unnecessary to point out that nobody in 2024 is pro-slavery, and that we are dealing with a disturbed man.) Then this little swipe at your host:

“Russell Roberts’ very thoughtful podcasts are not as big as the Tom Woods podcast, where he rails against the left and against other libertarians.”

Dear reader, you are welcome to examine the wonderful array of topics and people I’ve featured over the course of nearly 2500 episodes of the Tom Woods Show, and see if this is a reasonable summary, or whether in fact the Tom Woods Show might also be, believe it or not, “thoughtful”:

Now I have no particular beef with Gillespie, with whom I’ve always been cordial.

But Boaz has been obsessed with me for years.

They could not appear on my show, they certainly could not sail on the annual cruise I hosted with economist Bob Murphy, and they could not even like one of my Tweets.

(Then I won the Hayek Lifetime Achievement Award, which must have driven Boaz crazy, because it only made his demonization campaign seem weirder.)

He’s a sad man, David Boaz. When Bill Weld, bore and loser, was named the Libertarian Party’s VP candidate in 2016, Boaz excitedly tweeted out a picture of his book with Weld’s blurb on the back cover. Sad.

I’ll leave Dave to share the full details, but behind the scenes Boaz campaigned to get Dave Smith removed as emcee of a major liberty event — and was unsuccessful. Sad.

At this point I ignore anybody calling anybody a “racist”; normal people don’t do that, and in any event magical incantations like “racist” that are intended to shut down discussion aren’t actually an argument. If someone is wrong, give me reasons to think so. Your magic words hold no power over me.
