Trump has dealt a major blow to peace. He has disturbed and rattled relations with all the other major powers. He has undermined the word of the U.S. government. He has increased tensions with Iran. Iran’s reactions, now and later, are unknowns. Trump has destabilized the Middle East region. He has cheated the American people of peace. He has seemingly bestowed a favor on Israel that may turn out to be no favor at all in the long run. He has made accommodation with North Korea more difficult. Trump’s move implies greater confrontation with Iran, China, Russia, the EU and Turkey, among others. It implies greater confrontations that involve Israel. It implies the intention for the U.S. to stay in Syria indefinitely.
Trump has destabilized the world by this act. In particular, Russia will view him as more dangerous. Trump has just intensified Cold War II. Russian strategists will re-evaluate its nuclear posture. They will raise the odds even higher than they already have of a first strike initiated by the U.S. China will be more determined than ever to build its military and to ally with Russia.
