Hello Dr. Block, I am currently taking an environmental policy class at the University of XYZ, and we are discussing Herman Daly’s Sustainable Growth: An Impossibility Theorem: http://dieoff.org/page37.htm
In the paper, Daly argues that the first and second laws of thermodynamics leads us to understand that eventually we will run up against a wall with energy consumption, and therefore the only solution for “sustainable” development in the long run is to cut energy usages in richer countries (as is the nature of the carbon tax) combined with a massive redistribution of wealth. As a fellow Austro-Libertarian, I am less interested in a response to his policy prescriptions and more interested in your response to the challenge of “unsustainable growth.” Best, CM
Dear CM: In my view, this is entirely mistaken. I suggest you read this book as an antidote:
Desrochers, Pierre and Hiroko Shimizu. 2012. The Locavore’s Dilemma: In Praise of the 10,000-mile Diet. Public Affairs; https://www.amazon.com/Locavores-Dilemma-Praise-000-mile-Diet/dp/1586489402
You might want to consider transferring to a school where there are Austro-libertarian professors. I doubt there are any at your university.
