Liquorice could offer valuable protection against sunburn and skin cancer which, say Cancer Research UK, has become the most common cancer among 15- to 34-year-olds.
According to the National Cancer Institute in the US, when applied to the skin, liquorice extract helps combat UV damage and can reduce sunburn by acting as a powerful anti-inflammatory.

Researchers at the Institute of Chinese Medical Science in Taiwan have now discovered why. They found that the active molecule glycyrrhizin blocks AP-1, a protein that can cause inflammation and cancer.
Similar research at Hamdard University, New Delhi, revealed that liquorice helped skin cells recover after being damaged by UV light.
‘When we applied glycyrrhizin topically, there was an increase in enzymes that help restore cells to their optimal function after being damaged,’ explains Dr Sahar Rahman.
Liquorice extract is already used in many organic sun-care products because it combats inflammation, so helping to reduce the severity of sunburn.
